ECOWAS – More than a week ago, the regional organisation met in Abuja and gave the Niger junta seven days to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or face sanctions, including potential military intervention. Another meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to discuss the crisis in the Niger Republic has been organised. The ECOWAS meeting notification for this Thursday in Abuja was delivered on Monday by President Bola Tinubu, who also serves as the organization’s chairman.

A statement issued by the regional body reads as follows:

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened another Extraordinary Summit of the Authority on the political situation in the Republic of Niger. The Summit will hold in Abuja, on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

The ECOWAS Leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the Summit

In the meantime, Niger Republic’s military authorities reportedly sent reinforcements to Naimey, the nation’s capital, in anticipation of a potential ECOWAS military invasion.

A few hours after the military junta removed the democratically elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, and seized control on July 26, reinforcements of the armed forces are being deployed. This is because the military junta resisted complying with the sanctions and one-week deadline imposed by ECOWAS.

The one-week deadline was reached on Sunday, and according to a military source, troops from different regions of the nation arrived in a convoy of around 40 pickup trucks at dusk on Sunday to calm the populace and get ready for a possible battle.

The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, the junta’s official name, continues to hold President Bazoum hostage and effectively governs Niger. Due to the prospect of military intervention, the country’s military officials have closed the airspace, causing stress and confusion throughout Northern Nigeria, particularly in the areas that share borders with Niger.
